The Friendly Plan
L. Hernandez
Raul had had enough. Samuel, the new student in his class, had insulted every single one of his friends. He seemed to enjoy being mean and hurting other people’s feelings.
“We need to do something about Samuel,” Raul told his friends one day.
“What can we do?” asked his friend Lola. “He is bigger than all of us!”
The other friends agreed, but Raul had a plan. The following week, during lunch, he sat down across from Samuel in the cafeteria.
“You can’t sit there,” Samuel grumbled. Raul ignored him and began to take out the lunch his mother had packed. He noticed that Samuel had only eaten a small bag of potato chips. Samuel looked angry, but Raul only smiled at him and took a bite of his sandwich.
“We’re going to play basketball at recess today,” he said. “Do you want to play with us?”
Samuel laughed. “Of course not,” he said. “I don’t play with dummies.”
Raul nodded and ate some grapes. Then he held out the package of cookies his mother had packed for him. “I’m not going to eat these. Do you want them?”
Samuel looked at him with confusion. “What’s wrong with you?” he asked. “Why are you being nice to me?”
Raul smiled. “Because you’re new, and I realized that I never actually got the chance to meet you.”
Samuel took the cookies from him and held the package in his hands. “Thanks…” he said.
“If you want to play with us, the offer still stands,” Raul said. Then he went outside to the playground with his friends and waited for their new friend to arrive.
