Raul’s Big Problem

L. Hernandez

Raul and his friends had a big problem. Samuel, the new student, loved to torment his classmates. He pulled the girls’ hair and knocked their books from their desks. In P.E. class he deliberately pushed the other boys as hard as he could and then pretended it had been an accident.

One day, during recess, Samuel approached Raul and his friends on the playground.

“Your shoes are ugly!” he said to a girl named Lola. Lola looked down at her feet with a sad look on her face. Then Samuel turned to Raul. “Did your grandmother give you that shirt? I bet it used to be hers.”

Raul looked straight into Samuel’s eyes. “I happen to like my shirt,” he said, standing proudly.

Samuel looked confused for a moment. Then he frowned. “Of course you do,” he said, as he began to walk away. “You don’t know anything about fashion!”

After Samuel left, Raul turned to Lola. “Don’t worry about him,” he said. “I think your shoes are great.” His other friends gathered closer to cheer Lola up.

“Thank you,” said Lola. “I guess Samuel can’t really hurt me that much when I have such great friends.”
