Solve the following system of equations.

x + 4y= 8 (1)

x=5-4y (2)

What is the solution of the system?

(Type an ordered pair. Type N if no solution).

1 answer

Rearrange in the y = mx + b format for a straight line.
equation 1 is 4y = -x + 8 and
y = (-x/4) + 8

equation 2 is 4y = -x + 5 and
y = (-x/4) + 5
The slope, m, is the same for both lines; therefore, they are parallel. Parallel lines do not intersect (at least in the same plane).
