You need to get the knowns on one side and the unknowns on the other side. Move the -8 to the other side of the equation. To do that, add 8 to both sides.
9 = w + (-8)
9 + 8 = w + (-8) + 8
17 = w
9 = w + (-8)
9 + 8 = w + (-8) + 8
17 = w
