During pregnancy, an increase of physical and physiological changes take place. For example, there is an increase in weight. In addition, there is an increase of the hormone’s progesterone, estrogen, prolactin, and the synthesis of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin. Also, Oxygen demand increases, since the gravid woman increase hormones and increase respiration rate requires more oxygen. Moreover, the position of the fetus in the abdominal cavity affects the cardiac output, causing hypotension and leg’s edema, affecting the renal and urinary system. In summary, the nutritional needs also increase to prepare the mother’s body during pregnancy, for delivery, and breastfeeding.



The pregnant woman requires a balanced diet to prevent injuries to the brain of the developing fetus, birth defects, and nutritional deficiencies for the mother and the fetus. Furthermore, the woman, should have a diet that include an adequate amount of micronutrient, such as, vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids. Thus, avoiding tabaco, alcohol, caffeine, and other street drugs. Also, it is recommended to take a prenatal vitamin daily to support the pregnant body and to ensure the baby healthy outcome and normal development. Prenatal supplements include, folate/folic acid, Iron, Zinc, copper, calcium, and vitamin D.
