The Power of Water

The human body is made of about 60% water. We need water to survive, to function, and to be able to move our joints. Water is so important that we can survive without food as long as 3 weeks, but we can’t survive 3 days without water.

Electrolytes and water balance and prevent dehydration, which are the most important topics in health care. In the body, water acts as a lubricant for the the joints and makes up saliva and other body fluids. Water is a body temperature regulator and helps prevent and relieve constipation.

We hear people say drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. The Dietary Reference Intake for water is between 91 and 125 fluid ounces (2.7 to 3.7 liters) of water per day for adults. In reality, the amount of water needed varies by gender, weight, age, medical conditions, and activity level. For example, people with kidney injuries or kidney disease do not need this amout of water because their kidneys are not able to maintain water balance, so the most important of many nutritional restrictions for this group of people is water restriction.

Many times, I go through the day without drinking water when I remember that I haven’t been drinking enough or any water. I regularly experience crampy toes or Charlie Horses, so I need water. Also, my girlfriend gets migraines and dizziness. Her mother also, due to her distaste of water, consumes only sugary drinks worsening her diabetes. So this is the importance of water, to keep our body functioning properly, and healthy.

My favorite water to drink is seltzer water because of the fizzy flavor. When I drink plain water, I prefer bottled water instead of tap water. I dislike tap water because it has an after taste, like metal or plastic.

Hi Aura,

Thank you for sharing such an insightful post about the importance of water! You’ve highlighted some crucial points about how essential hydration is for our overall health. It’s fascinating to think about how our bodies function, especially considering that water constitutes such a large percentage of our composition.

I can relate to your experiences with hydration. It’s easy to forget to drink enough water during a busy day, and the effects—like cramps and headaches—can be quite inconvenient. Your mention of specific health issues, such as those faced by your girlfriend and her mother, really emphasizes how vital proper hydration is, especially for managing certain medical conditions.

Seltzer water is a great option for those who prefer a little fizz! I find that adding a slice of lemon or lime can make plain water more appealing as well. It’s all about finding what works best for you.

Thanks once again for shedding light on this important topic; staying hydrated is key to maintaining our health and well-being!

Best,
[Your Name]
