Digestion

GERD

A chronic digestive disorder that occurs when stomach contents leak into the esophagus.

Gerd symptoms are heartburn, coughing, wheezing, back wash of acid, food or liquids into the throat after eating, phlegm.

GERD is caused by stress, hiatus hernia, certain medicines, such as calcium- channel blockers, nitrates and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDS). Gastric acid flows from your stomach back up into your food pipe. (esophagus)

Treatment plans can be lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications will usually temporarily relieve symptoms, but stronger medication may be needed.

Hi Ashley,

Thank you for your insightful post on GERD. You covered the symptoms and causes well. I’d like to add that lifestyle changes can be particularly effective in managing symptoms. For instance, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding trigger foods (like spicy or fatty meals), and eating smaller, more frequent meals can make a big difference. Additionally, elevating the head during sleep can help reduce nighttime symptoms.

It’s also important to monitor how stress can exacerbate GERD symptoms, as you mentioned. Techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or yoga may help mitigate stress and, in turn, might reduce the frequency of GERD flare-ups.

Has anyone here found specific lifestyle changes or treatments particularly helpful in managing GERD? It would be great to hear about personal experiences or strategies that have worked for you!

Looking forward to more discussion!

Best,
