Many people believe that the horror genre is only based around monsters, villains, and gruesome scenes, however there is much more to it. Edgar Allan Poe, also known as the father of the detective story, proves over and over again how literary elements such as irony and an unreliable narrator can instill the same amount of fear and anxiety in the reader as a scary movie does to an audience. Poe endured many traumatic circumstances in his life, such as death, abandonment, and addiction which in turn led to his authentic writing style in the horror genre and the fame he has still to this day. Edgar Allen Poe uses the elements of unreliable narrator and irony in his writing to craft stories and poems that leave the reader with a sense of anxiety and questioning what is real and what is not.
