Early Portuguese Exploration
In 1487, the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias left the city of Lisbon in Portugal and traveled south on the Atlantic Ocean along the western coast of Africa to the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of the continent. His route stayed very close to Africa's western coast. During the years 1497 and 1498, the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama traveled from the city of Lisbon in Portugal southwest on the Atlantic Ocean along the northwest coast of Africa. At a point mid-way between the Tropic of Cancer and the equator, he continued due south, leaving the coastline of the continent. At about 30 degrees south of the equator he traveled east toward the southern tip of Africa until he got to the Cape of Good Hope. At that point, he continued north, staying close to the southeastern coast of Africa. When he got to the equator, he traveled northeast to Calicut on the southern tip of India.
