Spanish Explorers, 1513–1542
This map shows the areas of North American exploration by Spanish explorers from 1513 to 1542. In 1513, Ponce de Leon traveled northwest on the Atlantic Ocean from the Caribbean Islands to St. Augustine on the northwestern coast of Florida. From there he traveled south around the southern tip of Florida and then southwest to Mexico. Between the years 1528 and 1536, Cabeza de Vaca sailed north on the Gulf of Mexico from Cuba to the western coast of Florida. From there he sailed west along the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico. He then traveled west on land across the southern section of Texas to the southwestern point of New Mexico. At this point he traveled south into Mexico and then southeast toward Mexico City. Between the years 1539 and 1542, De Soto traveled across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain to Havana, Cuba. He then headed north to Florida where he started exploring on land near the southern portion of the Mississippi River. From St. Augustine, Florida, he traveled north to present-day Georgia and the Carolinas, then west to Tennessee, south to Alabama, northwest to Mississippi and Arkansas, and then south to Louisiana. Between the years 1540 and 1542, Coronado traveled north by land along the west coast of Mexico. He then traveled north into Arizona, then east to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Texas. From there he went north to Oklahoma and Kansas, then southwest back to Santa Fe, New Mexico.
