Read the following scenario: You are a second-grade teacher at Happy Valley Elementary School. You are teaching language arts and social studies. Your classroom of 21 students consists of 7 white students, 5 Latino students, 4 African American students, 3 Native American students, and 2 Asian students. Four of your students are identified as special needs, with one in a wheelchair. A few of your students come from the poorest neighborhood in Happy Valley.
Write a 700-1,050 word paper in which you outline the steps required for a multicultural education to be effective. The steps needed for a Multicultural Education in my classroom
1. I must build a lesson plan around topics and concepts that should be taught and not activities. Choose activities that will explore my topics and concepts.
2. Every student in my class will learn differently. Each student has a different learning style. They may include:
• Preferring to be in a big group to work on activities.
• Some may prefer to be alone or work in pairs.
• Some will like to role play
• Some will learn better if you read to them.
• Others will learn by reading it themselves.
• Some will enjoy and learn with narrative or story telling activities.
3. Be sure to include time for discussions. Be sure everyone shares their views and ideas.
4. Get your instructional material from many different venues; text, newspapers, videos/ movies, games, and workbooks.
To put my steps into action, I would need to choose a topic. When school first starts this would be a great topic for you to use. This will help everyone to understand each other. You can combine Language Arts and Social Studies together with this topic. The topic would be “The cultures in America”. The concept I would want my children to realize is how each of our many cultures have contributed to this great country, we live in today.
I want each student to become aware of their own culture and heritage, and then they will be able to share with the class what they have learned. The goal of this activity is to help build their self esteem and for the class as a whole to become aware of their rich culture. This in turn will help the student how their culture has help to develop our great country the United States of America that we know today. We are truly united in the many cultures in this land.
To start, I will have each student introduce themselves by sharing a few positive statements about themselves. This should help the students to find their comfort zone, so they will feel comfortable with each other.
Another way so the students will see there is not much difference between them; I will have the students write and share with the class:
1. What is your favorite food?
2. How many are in your family?
3. Do you have a brother or a sister?
4. Do you live with your parents, grandparents, etc.?
5. What do you like to do after school?
6. What is your favorite subject in school?
With these questions, the students will see that they have many things in common no matter their background. We will then start talking and learning about the different cultures in our classroom. Some may not even know what their heritage is. We may be Americans but our ancestors came from a different land. Therefore, we will expound on this and discuss the different cultures. The students will start working on class projects and homework projects. I would like every student to work at home with their parents and display their culture. This will help the students to see where they came from, what their heritage is, with the help of their parents. When finished, they can bring the project in and share with the class what they learned about their culture. In class, we will be reading different books, which will emphasis the cultures of the world. As groups in class, we will be making posters depicting the rich and diverse culture of this world. We will be listening to CD’s and learn the different songs and dances from each of the cultures. Throughout the unit of “The cultures in America”, we will also be keeping a journal of what we first thought about each culture and then what we have learned about the different cultures. Throughout the unit continue to praise ever student for their involvement and help in helping us learn about them and their heritage.
