It’s All About Character!
As you read The Great Gatsby, you will be turning in various components of your test replacement. We have broken the project down into smaller chunks so that you can really focus on reading, understanding, and creating the highest quality work you can!

Step One: Choose Your Characters
Using the Highlight Tool on Google Docs, highlight the two characters that you are going to analyze from the list below.

Character Number One: Jay Gatsby
STEAL Method
Analysis
Jay Gatsby is a mysterious and enigmatic character who appears to have a hidden past. He is charming and charismatic, but also seems to be hiding something.
Textual Evidence
1. Speech:
"There's the rumor that he killed a man who found out that he was nephew to Von Hindenburg and second cousin to the devil." (Chapter 3)
2. Thoughts:
Gatsby is driven by his desire to win back Daisy and is willing to go to great lengths to achieve this goal, even if it means manipulating the truth.
Effect on others:
Others are fascinated by Gatsby's wealth and lavish parties, but also gossip about his shady background and questionable business dealings.
Actions:
Gatsby throws extravagant parties in the hopes that Daisy will attend one of them and be impressed by his wealth and status.
Looks:
Gatsby is described as having a "heightened sensitivity to the promises of life" and always dresses in a way that exudes wealth and sophistication.
Character Number Two: Daisy Buchanan
STEAL Method
Analysis
Daisy Buchanan is a beautiful and desirable woman who is trapped in a loveless marriage. She is portrayed as shallow and materialistic, but also vulnerable and conflicted.
Textual Evidence
1. Speech:
"I hope she'll be a fool -- that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool." (Chapter 1)
2. Thoughts:
Daisy is torn between her feelings for Gatsby and her loyalty to Tom, and struggles with the decision of whether or not to leave her marriage.
Effect on others:
Daisy's beauty and charm make her the object of desire for both Gatsby and Tom, but also create tension and conflict between the two men.
Actions:
Daisy ultimately chooses to stay with Tom, despite her feelings for Gatsby, which suggests that she values stability and security over love.
Looks:
Daisy is described as having a "voice full of money" and always dresses in a way that reflects her social status and wealth.
