This Week’s Project Assignment: Theme Analysis
Step One: Motif Discussion
Complete the chart below about four different motifs seen in The Great Gatsby.
Reminder: A motif is a pattern or idea that is seen throughout a novel. It is usually one word or short phrase. (Example: Loyalty, or “Love conquers all”)
Motifs: One word idea or simple phrase that is seen throughout the story.
Example: Loyalty
Explanation: In 2-3 sentences, explain WHY this is a motif that we can see throughout The Great Gatsby.
Textual Evidence: Provide a quote from the text that demonstrates this motif.
Step Two: Select your favorite Motif
Using the highlight tool in Google Docs, highlight your favorite motif in the table you just completed. This can be the motif you noticed the most, or the motif you would most like to discuss.
Step Three: Analyze Your Motif
Complete the following analysis about the motif that you selected.

Copy and paste your favorite motif that you came up with into the box below.

In 1-2 sentences, explain what you think the author wants us as readers to understand about this motif after reading The Great Gatsby.
Example: The author wants readers to understand that justice is never as simple as it seems.
How Do You Know?
Using moments from the text, explain HOW you know the author was trying to get us to understand this idea about your motif. (2-3 Sentences)
Example: During the novel, we see the main character struggle with his ideas of right and wrong. He has grown up with a specific set of values and the conflict in the novel challenges those values.

During the novel...
Step Four: Create Your Theme Statement and Paragraph
We can easily take a motif and turn it into a theme statement by using the following formula: Motif+Author’s Opinion=Theme. Using the information you’ve collected about your favorite motif, create a well detailed paragraph explaining how F. Scott Fitzgerald develops the theme you’ve created throughout the novel.
Use the following sentence starter to begin your paragraph. Be sure that your paragraph is 5-7 sentences, explains how Fitzgerald develops the theme, and uses textual evidence to support your analysis:
In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald demonstrates the theme that…
Step Five: Present Your Theme Paragraph
Using one of the three multimedia options you chose at the beginning of this project, present display/present your theme paragraph.
