table
planets' orbital velocity
planet orbital velocity (mi/s)
mercury 29.74
venus 21.76
earth 18.5
mars 14.99
jupiter 8.12
saturn 6.02
uranus 4.23
solve. show your work. express the answer in fraction form.
1. how many miles does mercury travel in an hour? simplify the fractions in your answer.
my answer: 60*60=3,600*29.74=107064/1000000=13383/125000 miles
2. how much greater is the orbital velocity of mercury than jupiter? simplify the fractions in your answer.
my answer: 29.74-8.12=21.62=21 16/25 miles greater than Jupiter
3. during the time it takes saturn to travel 32,508 miles, how much time in seconds has elapses on earth? simplify the fractions in your answer.
my answer: 18.5*32,508 = 601398 = 601398/1000000 = 300699/500000
4. how many miles does venus travel in a minute? simplify the fractions in your answer.
my answer: 21.76*60 = 1305.6 = 1305 3/5

1.
mercury's velocity = 29.74 miles/second
= 29.74(60) or 1784.4 miles/minute
= 1784.4(60) or 107064 miles/hour
so 107064 mph
there is no fraction involved, so why create one?
2. how much greater is the orbital velocity of mercury than jupiter?
amount greater = 29.74 m/s - 8.12 m/s
= 21.62 m/s
or as a fraction 21 31/50 miles/s
--- you had the units only as miles, but velocity would be miles/sec
---- how did you get 16/25 to be .62 ?
3. Saturn goes 6.02 miles/s
so to got 32508 miles would take
32508/6.02 seconds
or 5400 seconds , again, no fractions resulted
4. is correct , but your units should be miles/min
2. my teacher said that it was miles per sec, but yes i agree with you. my bad, on a site i probably put in the wrong decimal when converting it into a fraction.
3. the question was, how much time in seconds has elapsed on Earth? so, i multiplied 32,508 by the seconds of earth which was 18.5
