speed of current ---- y
with the current: 3(x+y) = 36 ----> x + y = 12
against current : 6(x-y) = 36 ----> x - y = 6
add them
2x = 18
x = 9
then y = 3
the sailboat can go 9 km/h, and the current is 3 km/h
