At the beginning of the 1900s, Texas was an agricultural state, with few industries and a rural population. Since that time huge advances have made Texas a leader in the science and technology fields. One factor was the improvement of Texas universities through the creation of the Permanent University Fund. This fund uses profits from oil companies to provide money to Texas universities. Another factor was the Houston area becoming home to the Johnson Space Center. NASA provided jobs, education, and Texas led the space race to put humans on the moon. One of the earliest TX industries and leaders in technology is Texas Instruments (TI). In 1954 TI introduced the first transistor radio, and now they make calculators and nuclear missiles. Texas is also well-known for the healthcare industry and medical advances.
