This is asking for YOUR experience in which the listening process broke down. Apparently it refers to a specific speech that you heard.
what are the different stages of the listening process? in which they can be broken down?

I do not know how your source(s) is/are breaking down the listening process. However, here is my interpretation.

First, you need to be attending to what is being said, and then you need to understand what is being said. Giving the speaker feedback allows the speaker to know how much you understand.
