Aretha has 7 nickles(35 cents)and 5 dimes(50 cents).7*5=35,5*10=50, and 35+50=85 cents!
Let N be the number of nickels
Let D be the number of dimes
N = D + 2
5N + 10 D = 85 (cents)
Now substitute to get rid of N
5(D+2) + 10 D = 85
15 D = 75
D = 5
N = 7
If you don't know algebra yet, you could solve this by trial and error, starting wth 8 dimes and 10 nickels (which is more than 85 cents), and then reducing (D,N) to (7,9),(6,8) etc until you find a combination that equals 85 cents.

You should start off where there are 2 more nickles than dimes. For, example 10 nickles & 8 dimes, 8 nickles and 6 dimes!
