Jorge Luis Borges is one of the great literary individuals of Argentina. He is a poet, essayist, and short-story writer. Born in Argentina on August 24, 1899, Borges spent several years in Europe as a child and was educated in English as well as Spanish. Educated in Switzerland, Borges recognized early that he would have a literary career. From the 1920s on he was afflicted by a growing hereditary blindness. In 1938 a severe head wound seemed to free his deepest creative forces. His blindness was total by the mid 1950s and forced him to abandon the writing of long texts and begin dictating his works. As an adult he returned to Argentina to write and work as a professor of English. Artistically rebellious, Borges wrote poems and stories which are imaginative and often puzzling, many of them vehicles for complex philosophical themes. His 1944 collection of short stories, Ficciones, is widely regarded as his masterwork. His work embraces the "chaos that rules the world and the character of unreality in all literature." He died on June 14, 1986.

Como adulto regresó a la Argentina para escribir y trabajar como profesor de Inglés. Aha! My favorite author! Hopefully you did NOT write this out in English first! That impedes the flow of the Spanish. So, let me look only at the Spanish.
Why not simply: "Es uno de los grandes literatos..." And "Es poeta" is correct because the noun is not modified.
