What was the point of introducing x and y into the problem. It should have
simply be stated as:

Lindsay brought 12 watermelon slices and Caroline brought 9 watermelon slices. The 7 people at the party each ate the same number of watermelon slices. How many slices did each person eat?

Clearly: total number of slices = 21
number of people = 7
slices per person = 21/7 = 3
