a. 24 meters
b. 32 meters
i guarantee 100%. i got this question right :)
Jason wants to walk the shortest distance to get from the parking lot to the beach. a.How far is the spot on the beach from the parking lot? b. How far will he have to walk from the parking lot to get to the refreshment stand?

Utilize the Pythagorean theorem and the fact that you have three similar triangles.
B is wrong, b is 40
For this question you generally have to show your work (unless it's only for honors...)
For answer a, we'll use x for the unknown numbers. Because the triangle with the side of 32m and the triangle with the base of 18m share a side, x applies to both. So;
x/32 = 18/x
Cross multiply, and we get
x^2 = 576
Simplify...
_/x^2 = _/576
x = 24
And there's your answer for part a!
(Small note; _/ <- That's just how I write a square root. It's not division XD)
For part b, it's easier, assuming you remember the Pythagorean theorem (I sure as hell didn't for like three days XD)
For slight revision, the Pythagorean theorem is;
a^2 + b^2 = c^2
So...
24^2 + 32^2 = c^2
I forgot what it was called, but do whatever exponents tell you to do and...
576 + 1024 = c^2
Simplify...
1600 = c^2
So now that we know that, we can tell that c = the square root of 1600
c = 40
and that's the answer for b!
Hope these helped! (Or even made sense)

what happened here lol
Alr home slices, the answer is a-24 b-32
AMY wanta b mi IRS patner?
The answers are 24m and 32m
If anyone wants to DM, let me know :)
thanks for the answers hehe
chicken thank you so much, i havent been paying much attention but this made me realize I had to use the geometric mean to find that distance. i will try and use that in the future, thanks again. you know what they say, teach a man to fish...
I just simply use mathportals right triangle calculator to find the missing side lengths. Quick and easy..
So, some of yall are idiots. When doing the pythagorean theorem the hypotenuse is always by itself making the equation 24^2+x^2=40^2 which leaves us with 576+x^2=1600 then you subtract and find the square root of 1024 which is 32.
