I haven't read that book, but think about the definition of the term, and then about the major events for each of the characters. What do you conclude?
Another rite of passage that Brother went through is the transition from being a child to early adulthood. Brother matured considerably in the story and this is shown most clearly through his role as a teacher to his brother, Doodle.

In the story, Brother not only teaches Doodle how to walk, but believing in his own "infallibility," then sets out to teach Doodle a number of other life skills, including running, rowing, and climbing trees.
