In lab, we were finding the distribution coefficient for propanoic acid and ethyl acetate. As well as propanoic acid and toluene.

How would you write the chemical equation for the reaction of propanoic acid and ethyl acetate? I know it produces water in the end...but I am not sure how to write the product side.

I am not aware that these two chemicals react.
I'm not sure, but we were to formulate a chemical equation with propanoic acid and something ..in which I think it was supposed to be dissolved in ethyl acetate? We were to determine if propanoic acid was more soluble in water or ethyl acetate.

But since we were trying to find the distribution coefficient of propanoic acid and ethyl acetate. We used each solvent (toluene and ethyl acetate) to individually extract propanoic acid from an aqueous solution (in this case, water).
