I think you should also be aware that there is an informal kind of imperialism, too. A nation may, and in the last century commonly does, make alliances with a weaker nation, investing in the local economy or exerting political power, to gain an advantage over a rival nation. That, too, often involves exploitation of natural resources of the dominated area. Such informal imperialism can be for political reasons (as in the Cold War between the Soviet Union and "the West") or economic reasons, as in China's growing influence in Africa today. There are many instances/examples of such imperialism in Asia and the Americas.
