In the 1800s, two major events helped Americans move westward: the Louisiana Purchase and the Transcontinental Railroad. The Louisiana Purchase in 1803 was a huge land deal that gave the United States a lot of land West of the Mississippi River, opening up new areas for people to settle and explore. Meanwhile, the Transcontinental Railroad, finished in 1869, connected the East and West coasts by train, making it much easier for people to travel quickly and transport goods across the country. Together, these events made it possible for many Americans to move West and start new lives.
