I have to write an essay on why I deserve a scholarship for our band class trip to Puerto Rico, I was wondering what English teachers would be looking at/for in this essay and how long it should roughly be

I'd be looking for three good reasons why you think you deserve the scholarship. Be sure to follow the usual format:

Introduction, including a thesis statement
Three body paragraphs each detailing a reason that you deserve the scholarship
Conclusion

Make sure you've expressed yourself clearly. Edit carefully.

Proofread, proofread, proofread.

A reasonable length is about a page, double spaced. Your margins should be 3/4 to 1 inch.

Check later and tomorrow to see if any other teacher adds more information.

By the way -- as an English teacher, I'd be tempted to eliminate any essay that had any misspelled words or grammatical errors.
thanks, I will proofread and check for errors :)
You're welcome. Good luck!
This band scholarship would help me immensely to be able to accomplish my goal of going on the trip to Puerto Rico this Spring Break. I am a good candidate for this band scholarship because along the lines of what Mr. Schmitz has said, in order for me to help you, you have to help yourself first. Well to fulfill the helping myself part, I have participated in band fundraisers over the past two years and plan on continuing fundraising until the trip. Over the summer I got a job at the St. Louis Park Rec Center to earn money specifically for Puerto Rico. I also mowed my neighbors lawn, babysat for some families around the neighborhood and I raked my grandmas leaves. I want to go to Puerto Rico so much that this past thanksgiving break I babysat my neighbors house and cat. to get a little extra money to help pay for the cost. Even with these small jobs that add have added up, I still do not have enough to pay for Puerto Rico by myself.
The way that I see Puerto Rico is a way for me to be immersed in another culture and be able to practice my spanish while bonding with the band family. This opportunity of traveling with the/through band was one that would not have been imaginable with my family. I am paying for the cost of this on my own because my family can not afford to pay it for me. I have an older brother who is a Freshman in college and a younger brother that is in second grade. Even if my parents were able to help me pay for the trip, I would still do my best to pay for the trip on my own because I feel that it is important for people to work for some of the things they want in life.
Playing La Boriqueña in band class has been a learning experience and a great way to connect with the culture before prepare for the trip. The experience that I will have by going to Puerto Rico will for sure be lifechanging. It has the possibility of enhancing my musicalmusicianship skills as well as my personal characteristics for the better. This trip is a way to come closer together as a band family and take the classroom somewhere else and I want to be part of it/this. I am so confident that I will be able to raise enough money for the trip with the help of this scholarship.
Your supposition and question is nonsense.
