I told my students that our country is a democracy, but my classroom wasn't! Since I was responsible for whatever went on in my classroom, I adopted the opposite of the Burger King motto! "This isn't Burger King. You do it my way."

They got the message.
Perhaps the responsibility of keeping all students safe might interfere with the rights of students to have a private locker. However, the courts have ruled that school officials have the right to search lockers if they believe a student has hidden contraband in a locker.

Essentially the responsibilities of teachers is to uphold the rights of all students.
Writeacher is correct. But one of the rights of students is to learn and Writeacher's methods were the best way for all students to learn.
I am right there with Writeacher! So long as they want to do it my way, they can do what they want <G>
