There are about a thousand different types of problems with integers, so it depends on what type of problem. Do you have something specific in mind?

In general, modulo arithmetic is used, but it is taught in very few schools these days. Sometimes modulo is taught as a part of teaching number theory, in college. I have seen one college teach an introduction to modulo arithmetic in a course called Discrete mathmetics.
