hi i was just wondering if u could help me with this math problem. find dy/dx at the indicated point in two different ways (a)solve for y as a function of x and differentiate (b) differentiate implicity.

1. y^2=3x+1 (5, -4)
how do u do this in two ways? im confused. and whats the difference btwn those two ways and B??

You have
y2=3x+1 at p=(5,-4)
You can solve it implicitly by treating y as a function of x as
2y*dy/dx = 3
You can solve it as a function of x explicitly as
y = sqrt(3x + 1)
However, the question wants you to evaluate the negative branch of the function, so you need to use
y = -sqrt(3x + 1)
then differentiate to get
dy/dx = -1/(2sqrt(3x + 1)) * 3
Check that you get the same answer when you evaluate them at p.
