Ok now I'm trying to figure out the distance formula.

the coordinates are (-1,3) and (2,5)

So I take (5-3)^2 + (2-1)^2
and get 2^2 + 1^2.
so 4 + 1 is 5. so the square root of 5 is the answer?

your second subtraction is wrong

it should be (2-(-1)^2 which is 3^2

so you should have
distance =√(2^2 + 3^2)
=√13
