Georgia O'Keeffe was one of the most famous painters of the twentieth century. At a time when a few women achieved great success as artists, she dazzled the world with her enormous canvases of brightly colored flowers and her rustic renderings of the Southwest desert. She was a pioneer and an inspiration to artists and lovers of art throughout the world.
O'Keeffe was born in Sun, Prairie, Wisconsin, in 1887. By the time she was in eighth grade, she had declared to one of her classmates, "I am going to be an artist." Like many artists, O'Keeffe searched for inspiration to motivate her. Unfortunately, this caused concern when she went days without getting any work done at school. One of her art teachers explained to the school principal, "When the spirit moves Georgia, she can do more in a day than you can do in a week." Georgia would spend most of her life searching for the inspiration that would move her spirit to paint.
After graduating from high school in 1905, O'Keeffe moved to Illinois to study at the Art Institute of Chicago. Unfortunately, she suffered a bout of typhoid fever and could not return the following year. O'Keeffe was eventually able to resume her education in 1907 when she moved to New York City. However, she became dissatisfied with her work at the Art Students League. Returning to Chicago, she began work as an illustrator. With little time to paint the things she actually wanted to paint, O'Keeffe's dissatisfaction deepened. The young artist's spirit had yet to find its driving force.
