In your case : a = x , b = 2 x + 3

P = 2 a + 2 b = 72

P = 2 x + 2 * ( 2 x + 3 ) = 72

2 x + 4 x + 6 = 72

6x + 6 = 72 Subtract 6 to both sides

6 x + 6 - 6 = 72 - 6

6 x = 66 Divide both sides by 6

x =11

x = a = 11 cm

b = 2 x + 3

b = 2 * 11 + 3 = 22 + 3 = 25 cm

P = 2 a + 2 b

P = 2 * 11 + 2 * 25

P = 22 + 50 = 72 cm
