Ethiopian police foil rare bank hold-up, kill one

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopian police said on Saturday they shot dead one of four armed robbers who tried to hold up a state-owned bank in Addis Ababa -- an extremely rare crime for the Ethiopian capital.
Residents said a daylight bank robbery has not been attempted in recent memory in the heavily policed city.
"Four robbers who entered the bank posing as customers shot and wounded a security guard and threatened employees at gunpoint to hand over cash," a police report said of the Friday incident.
Officers who responded to the alarm at a branch of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia shot one suspect dead, and captured two others while the fourth escaped, police said.
Two officers were wounded in the shootout, police said.

PHOENIX -- A west Valley bank holdup Wednesday afternoon saw four robbers flee with an undetermined amount of cash, switch getaway cars and bail from the vehicle with officers hot on their trail.
The robbery began around 2:15 p.m. when four people pulled up to a Bank of America branch at 5401 West Indian School Road, police said.
Two of the men, armed with handguns, entered the back, announced a robbery and ordered customers to the floor., officers said.
The robbers obtained an undisclosed amount of money from the tellers, then ran out of the bank and into a waiting getaway car, according to investigators.

The vehicle traveled west on Indian School Road and soon pulled over, police said. The robbers switched vehicles and began driving a black Nissan, officers said.
Police said they spotted the vehicle and approached the car as it pulled into a trailer park. All four men bailed out and attempted to flee but were apprehended without incident.
Officers said they recovered three handguns and the cash taken from the bank and both cars used in the robbery.
Three adults were booked on bank robbery and additional charges. A juvenile was detained at a juvenile facility on bank robbery and additional charges.
