You placed electrodes in in an aqueous solution of HCl. H2 gas bubbled out at the - electrode (the anode) and Cl2 gas was discharged at the cathode (+ elecrode)
2HCl==> H2 + Cl2 . You must fill in from what you did; I wasn't there and don't know what you did.
