Calculate the oxidation number of sulphur in AL2(SO4)3

13 answers

SO4 is -2 there
O is also - 2 so total of -8
if S is +6
then
+6 - 8 = -2
S is +6. That last line Damon is showing that it checks out for S = +6 combined with -8 for the 4 O atoms leaves -2 for the SO4 ion as it should be.
Al3(so4)3
al2(so4)3 oxidation number
Al2(SO4)3
2Al+3S+12O=0
2(+3)+3S+12(-2)=0
6+3S-24=0
3S=0-6+24
3S=18
3S/3=18/3
S=+6
S=2
2(3)+3x+(-2)12=0
6+3x-24=0
3x-18=0
3x=18
x=6
I want aluminum
Al=+3 based on the periodic group rule...
S=+6
O=-2
al2 (so4) 3 = ?
3(2)+3×+12(-2)=0
6+3×-24=0
3×-18=0
3×/3=18/3
×=+6
Al2(SO4)3
Oxdn no: of Oxygen is -2
3×2+3×x+3×4×(-2)=0
6+3x-24=0
3x-18=0
3x=18
∴x=+6
Al2(SO4)3
2(O.N.of Al)+3[(O.N.of S)+4(O.N.of O)]=0
2(+3)+3(O.N.of S)+12(-2)=0
6+3(O.N.of S)-24=0
3(O.N.of S)=24-6
3(O.N.of S)=18
O.N.of S=18/3
O.N.of S=+6
