The poem "Grandma Ling" uses imagery to capture the idea that there are human connections that bring people together despite time, location, and cultural differences. This is first presented when the speaker describes her own appearance, as seen in her grandmother; "My image stood before me,/ acted on by fifty years."(L 15-16) Despite the fact that the speaker has (seemingly) not seen her grandmother before, she immediately realizes the similarities they share. This interconnectedness is also present at the end of the poem, when the speaker states that, "She spoke a tongue I knew no word of,/ and I was sad I could not understand,/ but I could hug her." (L 20-22) Here, the speaker shows that although she and her grandmother cannot communicate with words, they can still bond through love and affection.
