wat do i fill in the blanks with?

That is not the way I would set up the problem initially.

E = (3/5)B -40
E + B = 1600
(1600-B) = (3/5)B-40
(8/5) B = 1600 +40
B = (1600 + 40)*(5/8)= 1025
E = 1600 - B = 575

It is not clear from your statement of the problem whether Eva gets 3/5 of Bell's amount and THEN you subtract 40 (as I did) or whether it of 3/5 of (Bell's amount - 40).
when u say (8/5)B= 1600+40, do u mean (5/8)? im only in sixth grade n m confused
bell=1,560
Eva=1,600
bell=575
Eva=1,600
It can't be that one of them got 1600, they only have 1600 maple syrup and their sharing them
