The girl would have been rescued even if she was bad, so what was the point for her to put in extra effort to be good.

The older girl seems to think the theme of the story is that being good isn't always going to save you from your problems. Like when she said "wouldn't they have saved her even if she wasn't good?" Meaning that being good doesn't always come in handy.
