A cavity is a hole in a tooth caused by a buildup of bacteria called plaque. Teeth are normally protected by a layer of enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. But the bacteria in plaque consume leftover sugar from the food we eat. They produce acid as a byproduct. This acid slowly dissolves the enamel. Eventually the enamel is completely worn away and a cavity forms. Then, it is time for a visit to the dentist to get a filling.
