1. A trilobite is considered an index fossil because this organism existed during a limited period in Earth's history. That means that any fossil located in a layer of rock beneath a layer containing trilobite fossils is ____________ than a trilobite.

2. According to this diagram, monotremes, marsupials, and placentals have the same _________ known as therapsid.

For this one, there is a cladogram with the therapsid at the bottom and the monotremes and marsupials on the top.

Is 1. "older" and 2. "ancestor"?

the first is correct. On the second, I have no idea what the diagram is, however, I suspect your "ancestor" is correct.

Btw what grade level is this because I'm in 7th grade and I'm also in connections academy but I've been told that some of the stuff I'm doing is not 7th grade work, that includes the natural selection and adaptation unit test

The answer is older! A trilobite is an index fossil because it was the organism only existed during a limited time in Earth's history so if you find a fossil located in a layer of rock beneath a layer containing trilobite, it's older and can be used to help calculate the times other organisms were around.
