P.S. I'm not saying Reiny is wrong I'm asking so in the future I can know why.

(2^3 - 4 + 20)/2 = (8-4+20)/2 = 24/2 = 12
2^3 - 4 + 20/2 = 8-4+10 = 6

The parens make a big difference.

Just FMI, how did you get 9?
Answered by Gabby
Ok, well first of all.. I turned it in and got a 50% and my answers were correct... second of all I got 9 by doing exactly as told I plugged in the numbers so.. 2^3-4+20/4 then did then did the exponent and then got 8-4+20/4 put that in to a calculator and got 9.... maybe I should have listened to the calc. :(

Ouch! you are correct. I divided by t, not r.

Not only should you have listened to the calc, you should have noticed my typo. We try to help, but we're not always perfect; check our work not just the answers...
