why might the usa see strategy in the pacific islands?

Think about it, if China per say, attacks US, the US bases in the pacific islands would see it coming. Then the US would be prepared for an attack rather than be surprised by it. Also, they would have an easier trade route with the eastern Asian countries, like china, japan, russia etc.
