The People's Party grew out of a response to falling cotton & wheat prices in the South & trans-Mississippi West. The Farmers' Alliance, formed in TX in 1876, promoted collective economic action by farmers.

Please read those sites very carefully. The problems had been building up until the farmers started taking actions in the 1890s.
