the ages of a son and father are in ratio 3:8. If the son is 35 years younger than his father find their ages.

x = father's age
x - 35 = son's age
3/8 = (x - 35)/x
cross multiply
8(x - 35) = 3x

8x-280=3x
8x-3x=280
5x=280
x=56
