I wrote this as a topic sentence for a Hamlet essay (it is a compare/contrast essay between the play and the 2000 film adaptation).
"Maintaining the verisimilitude of Elizabethan times, the importance of respect and obedience are governed by the roles the characters abide by."
This is for my modern setting paragraph. What I mean to say is that during the Elizabethan times respect and obedience were important and that they amount of importance put on respect and obedience was based on social roles that the characters had. For example, the King and Queen were given utmost respect and always obeyed because of their position. I need to simplify that sentence because my teacher says it's too wordy.

I would simplify in this manner.
In Elizabethan times, respect and obedience to authority governed the relationships between all members of society.
