I suppose your prof wants a CHEMICAL method but believe me a quick flame test will tell you in the time it will take to get test tubes and chemicals from the store room. If your prof persists in wanting a chemical method, use NaOH. NaOH will react with MgSO4 to produce a white ppt of Mg(OH)2 and with KCl nothing happens.
