can someone please explain to me what happens to the mean and standard deviation of the distribution of sample means as the size of the sample decreases?

No real effect on mean.
Standard Error of the mean (SEm) is the standard deviation for a distribution of means (vs. raw scores).
SEm = SD/√n
Insert some n values with the same SD to find out what happens to SEm.
