How do you do this? I can't seem to come up with the correct answer...

just isolate all the y terms on te left:
xy = -3-x
now divide by x:
y = (-3-x)/x = -3/x - 1
as long as x≠0
xy = -3-x
now divide by x:
y = (-3-x)/x = -3/x - 1
as long as x≠0
-2 < 2x - 5 < 3
add 5 to all parts:
-3+5 = 2x-5+5 < 3+5
2 < 2x < 8
now divide by 2:
1 < x < 4
These are not always so simple. You might have to separate into two problems to be solved separately:
-2 < 2x-5 and 2x-5 < 3
add 5 to all parts:
-3+5 = 2x-5+5 < 3+5
2 < 2x < 8
now divide by 2:
1 < x < 4
