Did you mean
f(x) = 8/(x+7)
then f(1) = 8/8 = 1
avg rate of change = (f(x) - f(1) )/(x-1)
= (8/(x+7) - 1)/(x-1)
= ( (8 - x - 7)/(x+7) )/(x-1)
= ( (1-x)/x+7) )/(x-1)
= -1/(x+7)
f(x) = 8/(x+7)
then f(1) = 8/8 = 1
avg rate of change = (f(x) - f(1) )/(x-1)
= (8/(x+7) - 1)/(x-1)
= ( (8 - x - 7)/(x+7) )/(x-1)
= ( (1-x)/x+7) )/(x-1)
= -1/(x+7)
