So you mean alkali metal or alkaline earth metal? The way you have it written (half and half) I can't tell. My choice for desiccants is Mg(ClO4)2. CaCl2 is cheaper but I think Mg(ClO4)2 is better.

I don't know that much about biochemistry. My best guess is that proteins require special care that the desiccant is not TOO good. Try your text. I didn't see anything on the web.
